Loss creates a whirlwind of activity at a time when you want the world to stand still. You are forced to make significant decisions when you are still in a state of shock and disbelief. I remember how difficult it was break the news to family and friends, to plan a service, to write an obituary. All of this flashes through my mind when I hear of a loss.
Loss also creates long term change. I cannot be the person I was before. Losing my daughter created a void and altered the future; trying to rebuild my life has been a painful process. I have a greater empathy with others who are trying to navigate this new path.
Psalm 31:9 expresses the overwhelming nature of loss:
“Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress;
my eyes grow weak with sorrow,
my soul and body with grief.”
Grief is an all-encompassing experience, affecting the body, mind and soul. At first it seems loss and grief will overtake us, but over time it can create a greater capacity to comfort others suffering from a loss.
